Underarm sweating is an embarrassing problem for just about everyone at some point. It’s easy to forget to put on an anti-perspirant one day, and then later on find yourself soaked to the skin. For some people, though, being embarrassed by their underarm sweating is a problem that they end up having to face every day. It can severely impact their lifestyles, and can make them less willing to socialize, leave the house, or do anything that might trigger a sudden bout of excessive underarm sweating. When sweating becomes a major problem, though, then many people feel forced to turn to medical procedures.
There are two procedures in particular that are often used to treat excessive sweating, particularly when it occurs in the underarms- botulinum toxin injections, and thoracic sympathectomy. Botulinum toxin injections are easy to administer, not very expensive, and don’t require actual surgery. A doctor will place the injection in the area that’s perspiring excessively, and the toxins present in it will prevent sweat glands from being able to function properly for a period of time afterward. The down side to this procedure is that these injections are generally painful, and usually not a permanent solution. Like botulinum toxin injections for treating wrinkles, these injections must be repeated once symptoms begin to return, usually a few weeks to a few months after the initial treatment.
A thoracic sympathectomy is a bit more complex than simple injections. In this procedure, doctors actually go into the thorax, or trunk, of the body via two very small incisions in the armpit area. Cameras are inserted in the incisions, and a small amount of air is pumped in to move the lungs and other organs out of the way. Assisted by the cameras, surgeons then locate the nerve ganglion responsible for causing excessive sweating, and remove it. This procedure is extremely effective for treating the underarm area, with less than ten percent of patients requiring a second surgery. The down side to this procedure is that it is expensive, must be done under general anesthesia, and requires a much longer recovery period than other, more temporary treatments do.
